Previous Students Work Analysis - (Canopy Climbers)

The use of high key and low key lighting to show different moods from how it can be a negative time through low key lighting to then being a positive time with high key lighting. There is very little use of high key lighting which shows the general outline of the video and how there is very little positive things happening.

The setting as well is also relevant to the song and the key themes that the music video wants to suggest which is about violence and crime. The dark setting of back roads and buildings gives this image across to make the video more realistic and appeal to the audience.

The make-up used is very little as the video is supposed to come across as gritty and about real life so excess make-up would be unnecessary. They do use make-up for when the boy is beaten up which is very realistic and not over the top and excessive. The costumes that our used are very true to real life and look like something that regular teenagers would wear, this emphasises the image of real life and what happens to some people on a day to day basis.

Character positioning as well is also strong throughout the video as there isn’t a point where characters are cut out or are blocking a shot that we need to see. The story of the video is therefore a lot clearer as we can see in every scene what is happening and then how the story is progressing.

The facial expressions throughout are very bleak and simple, this shows the theme of violence and crime and how it isn’t a positive thing. This is very similar throughout even as the story changes, although there is the occasional expression of sadness as the character realises what he has done and the consequences he now has to deal with.

The storyline fits to the song about a boy who gets beaten up and then works hard to be able to defend himself from it happening again and also from the view of the bullies as they realise what they have caused. This works with the song being called “Stuck” as it could be about being stuck in two minds about what to do in certain situations and how to overcome them.

The editing for this video is smooth which shows a clear storyline and makes it easy to follow. The clips used as well all flow together seamlessly to create a storyline which we can relate to.  The transitions between scenes happen instantly which makes the video more like real life as how there is no time to wait and everything happens so fast.

There is a wide variety of camera angles used such as extreme close-ups to show the emotions of the characters so we can see and understand how they are feeling. Close-ups are also used to show different props such as a spray can and hand  tape which give a further insight into what the character is like, spray can for crime and tape for fighting.  The use of medium shots shows body language and how characters act.
