Previous Students Work Analysis - (Ariana Grande)

Problem by Ariana Grande

The camera angles in this video almost always are focusing on one or two people, these include mid shots, high shots, close ups, worms eye, long shots, and low shots. The range of camera angles shows they have put thought into how many camera angles they need and what ones are needed. The camera angles were used well and were for the most part relevant.

The editing was done well with different cuts and transitions along with a shot where the shot went from black and white to colour. The editing did not feel too much or too little, and was all appropriate to the pace of the song.

The lighting ranged from natural when they were outside to artificial by a spotlight or a projector against a wall. These were all used well and it was nice to see a video that used something other than natural light in their video.

The props were minimal and only really included a pole that the actors danced around.
The colours were mainly natural, however the projector added very bright and vibrant colours to the video. There was also a shot that was black and white.
The makeup went from natural to having red lipstick and thick eyeliner on, however this did not take away from the video at all.
The costumes used were all casual, however some looked like jeans from the 90’s, this felt odd as there was no real reason to it and it didn’t fit the very current song.
The actors were almost always in the centre of the shot, however in a few shots they are to the side of the shot.

The setting included an alley, a park, and in front of a projection. This was used well as you didn’t get bored from them being in one place throughout the whole video.

The facial expressions were usually natural, however at points they had very big facial expressions, that felt a bit too much considering they were only dancing at the time, it felt like they were trying too hard and this made it uncomfortable to watch.

The story was appropriate to the song as it was mainly dancing in front of the camera and there was no obvious story, this worked well with the song.

The video does fit the song because it is fun and dancing like the song is meant for.

Strengths
Loads of camera angles
Fits song well
Good production – camera, editing
Costume was consistent
Projection was used well

Weaknesses
Lip-syncing not always in time
